Scrappy Menu Planner

I'm Sunday Scrappin' two weeks in a row! I woke up feeling crafty again today so I altered a notebook for menu planning. This notebook came with two plastic dividers & a pocket but they weren't where I wanted them, so I took moved things around. I only used one of the dividers, putting a blank calendar behind it & am going to get an erasable pen so I can write out my meal plan each week, this way I can also try to avoid repeating dishes too often as I'll see what I made in the weeks before. I sectioned the notebook into seven sections; slow cooker, chicken, beef, pork, sides, desserts & misc. for breakfast dishes, salads, anything that won't fit into the main categories. In the back I used the plastic pocket page for notes, I want to keep grocery receipts as a way to track our grocery budget and can put a running shopping list in there also. Because I want to use this planner for as long as I can I don't want the shopping lists to tear out of the pages so I'll just use the pocket to hold it. My kitchen colors are green & orange so I looked through my supplies & found patterned paper that had those colors. The letters are from a stack of punch out letters, also using green & orange. I think this will be a fun way to track my menu & have my commonly used recipes handy.

Last week I didn't do a challenge but this week's challenge is to complete a gift - I'll definitely be working on gifts. I have handmade gifts that the kids will be helping to make as well as a list of scrappy gifts I'll be giving away. I'll have to be sneaky in my posting as the recipients read my blog. We'll be heading out to California in two weeks so I need to get busy on my gift making. Join in the fun & check out other scrappers by clicking the button above. Happy scrapping!

Gobble Til You Wobble

Happy Thanksgiving!

I LOVE Thanksgiving - fall is my favorite season, the leaves turning and falling, the crisp air, the pumpkin pie, turkey dinner & all the fixings...LOVE it all. This Thanksgiving is especially sweet. Shawn is home earlier than expected and we're all in good health. Last Thanksgiving was celebrated a week late because of a nasty stomach bug being passed around at my parent's house. We are cooking our first Thanksgiving meal this year. We may or may not end up having guests - depends if any of the single soldiers end up coming over. But even if it's just the four of us it will be special. Not only because Shawn is home but because it's our first time doing Thanksgiving and my first year EVER not having multiple houses to go to or having two {or more} Thanksgiving meals within a week. As a kid we were always hopping around from family to family & that increased more after my parent's divorce.

I've got cranberry sauce chilling in the fridge, pumpkin pies baking in the oven & more to do tonight but I wanted to take a moment & share what I'm thankful for this holiday. I really should sit & write it down more often but I am thankful for so many things year round.
  • My Family - Without their love & support I would have had a much more difficult 14 mos while Shawn was away.
  • My Husband - I'm so blessed that he is home but even more than that I'm blessed that while we were half a world apart his love for me did not fade. While he may leave his stuff all over the place & I may never see the bottom of the laundry basket again he's a great husband. He supports & encourages me in every way, sees things in me I usually don't & catches me when I feel like I'm going to fall.
  • My Kids - They are loud, obnoxious & wild and I wouldn't have it any other way. (unless I have a headache or am pms'ing) ;) They are so sweet, fun to watch & make me smile daily.
  • My Friends - old & new, near & far. The phone calls, computer chats, going to lunch or out shopping & girls nights have been fun, encouraging & usually just what I needed to keep going day to day. Even my blog friends/readers have been a support & it's been fun getting to 'know' you all.
  • My Savior - I don't talk about my faith a lot on here, for various reasons, but I am thankful everyday that Jesus died for my sins to save my poor soul so that I may have eternal life with him.
  • My Freedoms - I'm thankful to live in America where I am truly free, can exercise my voice without fear and for all of the members of the military who work & fight to protect those freedoms daily.
I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving! No matter who you are celebrating with or what meal you are eating take some time to think about what or who you are thankful for. Time to clean up the kitchen some before finishing up the food & mopping the floors. I'll share our "rookie" meal in another post.

Scrappin A Planner

It's been a while since I've posted a Sunday Scrap or well, scrapped at all really but I'm here this week! My honey came home about a week and a half ago. We've been busy around the house & I've been sick off and on with a funky head cold/stomach thing. Lydia was sick one night, Shawn has had a couple days of not feeling well and fortunately Michael skipped it all together. But I think I'm fully recovered *knock on wood* and woke up feeling craftsy this morning. My BFF made a cute holiday planner after seeing one on another blog and I thought it was a good idea too!

It didn't come out quite as I had pictured but it'll do. I wasn't thinking when I bought my notebook and it had a pink cover so I had to incorporate pink into my Christmas theme. It works, just not what I had originally thought about. Mine is divided into five sections - Gifts, (friends & family) Cards (yearly letters & Mary Kay cards), Events (travel, parties, outings), Lists (shopping and whatever else I end up listing), Misc (anything else that doesn't go into a category). The front of the notebook has a thicker page that has a pocket on the front and back - that is by the gifts section so I'll probably use it to hold gift receipts.

I like the idea of it so much that I think I'm going to alter another notebook (little bigger) for my recipes. Recipe cards in a box don't work for me, I lose track of ones I save to my computer or bookmark so I think this will be my best bet for keeping it straight. Also, it would be a great way for me to keep my menu plans organized and even track shopping lists if I do it right. Click on the SS button above to see what other scrappers have been up to!

OH & since I have to come up with a challenge for whoever posts after me...here goes. Create your own Christmas planner if you haven't already & if you have then make another one for a friend or alter a notebook to serve another purpose. Let me know if you take on the challenge! Happy Scrappin!

Our Homecoming :D

Before you shake your finger at me for being on the computer - Shawn is enjoying some time with the kids, seeing how much Michael has learned while he's been gone & showing Lydia some letters too. I have family who check my blog so I wanted to tease them with some of our photos. The day was great! We got up on time, out the door on time & his flight was on time. The kids were adorable in their little outfits & I had a sign hanging on the carport waiting for him. I couldn't find him in the sea of ACU's & started getting nervous that he wasn't on that flight for some reason. When they all came in the doors I actually started shaking - not convulsions or anything but couldn't hold my hands still. I was so anxious to see him & it still didn't seem quite real. I was still looking out into the crowd while standing on the first step trying to get a better view & he snuck under me. I screamed & jumped into his arms, we hugged & kissed and it was sweet. Then he hugged & kissed on the kids, Lydia was shy at first but as I type this she's sitting in daddy's lap giving him kisses and singing with him. Michael was all over it, I didn't tell him until this morning - he was excited but stayed calm waiting. They both did really well & the time passed pretty quickly. It still doesn't seem 'real' that he's home and part of me is still waiting for him to pack up & leave again. I'm sure that's part of the adjustment, but we're all loving it. Oh & I had planned on making him creamy chicken & green chili enchilladas for dinner but he wanted McDonalds, LOL. I would have been offended that he didn't want my home cooking but honestly I was tired and doing a drive thru didn't sound too bad. We'll have lots of homemade meals in the months to come.

Shopping for Snacks

Yesterday I went to the commissary, crazy as usual around payday and as usual I had to go because we were running out of important things like jelly and cereal and this coming week is busy like most have been lately. I went in thinking I was all prepared with my menu plans and shopping list. Somewhere in the middle of the busyness of the aisles, Michael wanting to dance around or 'help' me shop & Lydia trying to squirm out of her seat I realized that I could get Shawn's favorite foods and NOT send them off in a care package but rather have them waiting for him in the fridge or pantry. :D I would have done a cartwheel if I weren't in the crowded commissary. I take that back, I'm not sure I can even still do a cartwheel. Anyways, I was excited. I got biscuits, pepper jack cheese, pepperoncinis and mandarin oranges. I JUST realized that I forgot to get bacon, hot links & soda. I'll have to go back for milk in a few days so I'll get the rest later.

I still can't give out any dates - don't have a specific date & OPSEC rules. But I can say that my husband SHOULD be home in just over a week. So we're literally counting down the days. No longer months or weeks but DAYS. It's amazing. Nearly 14 months ago it felt like it would be forever until he was back home, I was venturing into an unknown reality. I've grown a lot during this time, made good friends & found that I am capable of taking care of several things on my own. But I really enjoy doing it all with my husband alongside & leading the way.

The last time I talked about Shawn coming home I had a to do list of sorts....I just looked at it and wow I was crazy to think I'd get all of that done while maintaining a clean house, getting Michael to & from school and working my business. So I've got a new more realistic list that I'll share.
  • Vacuum and clean couch
  • Clean baseboards
  • I started to write clean ceiling fan until I looked up & realized we don't have one in this house. Yes, I'm losing it. No, it doesn't bother me. ;)
  • New filter for vent
  • Change shower liner {for $2 I'll save myself scrubbing time}
  • Take my old clothes to Back Door Boutique {store that lower ranking families can get items for free once a week}
  • Find someone who wants Michael's old clothes or BDB
  • Send Lydia's old clothes to my sister for my sweet little neice
  • Organize scrap stuff
  • Organize Mary Kay product/supplies Check
  • Return patio chairs to friends
  • Computer boxes to Lydia's closet {I'm holding two computers for a friend who got them as Christmas gifts for two of her sons but they're in our bedroom, Lydia's closet has room so they're going in there}
  • Trash out of car
  • Vacuum car
  • Wash car
  • Organize closet??? {this one may or may not be done until he's home and we get a dresser}
I have some other things that I need to take care of like getting Shawn's cell phone turned on, adding his truck back to the insurance, update registration & get a new battery because he forgot to remind me to start it up once a month or so. I also have to figure out just what I'm wearing to pick him up, have an idea but it's not set yet. The kids' outfits are set & I'll hang up my sign closer to him coming home. Now I'm all motivated to go start getting things done, yesterday I organized my MK product & supplies, the laundry/storage room looks SO much better now but still more to do.

We did this webcamming a few weeks ago & I got screen captures of it. It was fun to do, even more fun knowing he'd be home in person soon. No more worrying if I forgot to forward the house phone or if Comcast was having technical issues, no more putting messenger on my phone everytime I leave the house, no more taking the phone into the bathroom & everywhere with me. No more VTC scheduling, waiting & connection issues. It will be strange to be able to call my husband rather than just waiting for a phone call, but I'm sure it's an adjustment I'll get used to quickly. =]
