Going Green...or a lighter shade of brown?
I wouldn't call myself an environmentalist {not that there is anything wrong with that, it's just not me} but I do try to do my part. I am aware that our natural resources won't last forever and believe we should be good stewards over the resources we've been given. So while I haven't put out the cash for a hybrid car yet I do recycle my paper products each week and try to re-purpose or give to other people items that I no longer have use for. Now you see why I don't call myself an environmentalist, I don't do much beyond being aware and recycling - but every little bit counts right? Oh and thanks to my dad's constant reminders growing up I'm really good about turning off lights when they aren't in use.One thing I've been wanting to do is get reusable grocery bags. In recent months the commissary has been promoting using paper over plastic because it's better for our environment, costs the store less and we can recycle the paper bags easily each week. So I started using paper bags more often, though sometimes I would forget to specify. Anyone who has 'gone green' will be glad to know that I save my plastic bags to use later in my bathroom garbage can, for garbage in my car and other various things. Monday as I was getting ready to check out I saw a rack with reusable grocery bags selling for 70 cents. They look similar to the one pictured above but are green and with a different logo. I bought two because I was curious how much they would hold and asked that any other bags be paper. My next trip I'll be buying a couple extra bags. They hold quite a bit, probably the same as two plastic bags, and have handles which makes carrying SO much easier. This is a big bonus for me shopping with two little ones and having to carry it all in the house myself, less trips the better.
Do any of your grocery stores offer reusable bags? Have you tried them? If they don't sell them I recommend doing a quick google search or clicking on the picture above to order some. I did a search sometime ago and found bags for 99 cents a piece. Now I just need to remember to keep the bags in my trunk and remember to pull them out of the trunk each time I go in the store. There's one more thing I can add to my list of contributions to this earth - using the reusable grocery bag and telling others about it. If you're using a reusable grocery bag or being mindful about our natural resources give yourself a pat on the back and spread the word.

11 and then you said:
My favorite store has those bags and I have a bunch.... in fact now when I travel I pick them up at other grocery stores just for fun. Maybe we should all do an exchange?
The hardest part is putting them IN the car and then BRINGING them into the store...but they do make grocery shopping easier..
I agree...remembering to put them back in the car is a bit of a struggle -- but other than that, they're FANTASTIC!!
We've been using them for the past few months and we love them. Very stury, and yes -- larger than plastic bags. Love them, love them, love them!
Yes, one of our local grocery stores has those bags, too. (Possibly the other one does too, but I never shop there) What I've been using though, is large plastic bins that the parent chain (in the city) was promoting for a while. I never get bags at the grocery store and once I get to the van, I put the groceries in the bins for transport. I can put three bins in my girls' wagon, which makes transporting them to the house a breeze! Each bin holds probably 4 or 5 bags worth of stuff. The bins stack neatly together, so keeping three in the back of the van at all times doesn't take up a lot of room and, of course, they're handy for carting other stuff around, too.
I like your contribution! You know I think I might have seen them at the store but not thought about it enough to grab one, I don't think I knew they were so CHEAP! For that little I can totally do it! Hehe, I saw them at Costco the other day - YEAH RIGHT - you MIGHT get ONE huge container of mustard in there, but not much more than that!
My husband and I have about ten of these types of bags. And though we still frequently get plastic dogs (we live in town and walk our dog on a leash... so you can figure out what we recycle our plastic grocery bags for!), I have found these green bags especially good for carrying things back and forth from work to home... everyone knows that the green bags are Professor N's, and they are really quite sturdy. I also try and use them when I go to Walmart, as they don't have paper.
Yes, I agree. I like to use the re-usable bags as well (or my hands /pockets/purse if I only buy a thing or two). It takes approx. 1,000 years for plastic to degrade--and it's only been around since the 1950's or so as a substitute for cutting down trees for paper bags... so where does all that plastic go? Scary to see that it ends up in our oceans, tons and tons circling and whirling around in massive gyres waiting for their appointed year to be no more. There is, fortunately, research taking place as we "speak" in the creation of plastic bags with a century-shelf life. A much better proposition than 1,000. So, even things like Tupperware and other plastic containers may soon be very more accommodating for the masses.
i live in New England - we have lots of Stop n Shops... they offer cloth reusable bags. my husband brought home a few last year & they work pretty nicely!
ps: we share the grocery shopping load. neither of us enjoys it!
I love these - our stores have them too. Cost me 99 cents each though. :-) Still cheaper then I could make my own.. and as much as I'd like to have prettier ones, these are just so practical, and sturdy, and hold so much. It's just remembering to take them into the store with me!
I have several of these reusable bags which I purchased from my stores, but some stores still do not offer these. However, I have come to notice that alot more stores are recycling their plastic bags now so we do save some for garbage bags and for poop-scooping but the rest we collect and take to the stores that have a recyling bin for these bags. Unfortunately, as of yet they are not accepted by the recycle pick up service.
I got these GREAT bags from www.minusbags.com. They're 100% cotton and you can WASH them which comes in handy, cause reusable bags can get skanky. They are more expensive but definitely worth it. They look so much nicer than those weird plasticy ones with ugly store logos on them. And they hold a lot more, too.
Very cool! I'll have to see if my store carries any.
